melissa stern & charlotte foust:
a common space

may 9 - august 30, 2008

meet the playful, quirky characters of charlotte foust of charlotte, NC and melissa stern of new york, ny. through anthropomorphic forms, both artists invent creatures that are simultaneously dark and humorous. at first glance, the work appears naive, yet as you look more closely, a complex depth is revealed, visually and psychologically.

foust works in paint; stern works in carved and fired clay. their imagery takes us back to childhood, touching universal memories we all share. figures float in their own worlds, not set in landscapes or other context. they share a common space that could be anywhere - familiar, yet unknown. join us and explore the possibilities.
